What our members say

I think Healthy Friendships has helped me get the most out of my life.

I am an agoraphobic with long term mental issues. If my befriender did not insist I would never go out. I now get to go out regularly and my confidence is growing

Healthy Friendships helps get people together to do healthy activities and make friends. This can be difficult when you get older and your abilities are not great

I look forward to the clubs and Fit & Fun group, which I enjoy thoroughly. A few more extra exercises.

Healthy Friendships in South Shropshire

Healthy Friendships was established in 2005 following a county wide initiative covering Welshpool, Newtown, Llandrindod wells, Brecon and Ystradgynlais. Funded by various organisations including Big Lottery, PMHA, Powys Local Health Board and Powys Social Services.

In 2005 Radnorshire Healthy Friendships applied in their own right for Big Lottery Funding to continue the scheme in Radnorshire. Covering Builth Wells, Rhayader, Llandrindod Wells, Crossgates, Newbridge on Wye, Knighton and Presteinge.

In 2009 a further application for funding covering Montgomeryshire was successful. We now cover most of Eastern Montgomeryshire including Llanidloes, Llandinam, Newtown, Llanyllyn, Montgomery, Kerry, Chirbury, Welshpool and Pant

In 2011 we were successful in gaining funding from the Big Lottery for a 4 year project in South Shropshire covering Ludlow, Craven Arms, Clee Hill, Cleobury Mortimer, Clun and Bishops Castle.

What is Befriending?

The aim of befriending is to offer support in the community to adults (18 and above) who are experiencing mental and or emotional distress. Following, or during, a period of emotional distress, people can experience loss of self-esteem, confidence and purpose as well as a loss of contact with friends, family and the wider community.

Although they may have assistance from professional agencies or services, they may well lack any avenue through which to make social and other contacts and to ease their sense of isolation. 1 in 4 people suffer some kind of emotional distress problem during their lifetime.

Depression and Anxiety are very common today. Medical treatments are often restricted to a course of antidepressants but - The condition often persists and relapse occurs

We offer a unique one to one Befriending scheme to help people to enhance their lives and fulfil their own objectives. Confidence gained through Befriending will increase social contact through experiencing new hobbies and spending time with other members.
We also offer small, medium and large group events such as Crafty Friends, Fit & Fun, Relaxation, Pub Quizzes, opportunities to raise funds, volunteer, Social and Educational Outings
